How do I add funds to my IRA Trust?

How do I add funds to my IRA Trust?

All funding for your IRA Trust must flow through your IRA custodian:

  • Step 1: Get funds into your IRA account at the custodian (IRA Resources)
  • Step 2: Direct the custodian to invest those funds into your trust entity

Three ways to add funds

Funds can enter your IRA through contribution, transfer, or rollover. Each method uses a different form and follows specific procedures.

  • Contributions are new deposits you make for the current or prior tax year. These are client-initiated and require a Deposit Coupon from IRA Resources. You send the form along with a check or wire transfer directly to the custodian.
  • Transfers move funds from another IRA to your self-directed IRA. These are custodian-initiated events. You complete a Transfer Request form and submit it to IRA Resources, who then contacts your old custodian to request the funds.
  • Rollovers move funds from employer plans like 401(k), 403(b), or pension plans into your IRA. These are client-initiated events. You will contact your old plan administrator to request distribution payable to your IRA at IRA Resources.  You must also submit a Rollover form so IRA Resources can properly record the transaction.

Moving funds to your trust

Once funds arrive at the custodian, they sit in your IRA account but are not yet invested in your trust. You must direct IRA Resources to make an additional investment from the IRA into your trust entity.

This requires submitting a Buy Direction form. The form instructs IRA resources to transfer a specific dollar amount from your IRA into the trust, sending the funds to your trust's checking account. The custodian processes this investment and updates their records to reflect that your IRA now holds additional capital invested in the trust entity.

Critical warning about direct deposits

Never deposit contribution, rollover, or transfer funds directly into your trust checking account. This breaks the custodial chain of reporting and creates severe tax consequences. Always route funds through your IRA custodian first, then use the Buy Direction process to invest into the trust.
